Camán Abú takes first swings in Mayo

The first ever Camán Abú adult recreational hurling blitz took place in Mayo recently, as some 30 players descended on the Sportlann in Castlebar to have a go at the novel game introduced by Croke Park in recent years. Players from Ballina, Westport, and Claremorris, along with members of the Mayo Ladies Senior Football panel were on hand to give the event a strong launch - after being introduced to clubs in Mayo in the past few months.

Mayo Sports Partnership and GMIT celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities

The Mayo Sports Partnership and GMIT hosted a talk on ability and outdoor activities on Monday, December 3 in GMIT Castlebar to celebrate International Disability Awareness Day. The day organised by Ray Mc Namara (sports inclusion officer with the Mayo Sports Partnership) and Nigel Jennings (sports officer in GMIT) was launched by Mayor of Castlebar Cllr Brendan Heneghan, who spoke about the importance of sport and physical activity to people of all abilities and welcomed Dennis Toomey to Castlebar. The talk was given by Dennis Toomey, Irish para cycling manager and chairman of the Para Cycling Commission. Dennis is the man who brought Para cycling from nothing to the success of the London Paralympic games where the Irish team returned home with two gold, one silver, and two bronze from the games.

Mayo AC celebrated 25th birthday in style

Mayo AC celebrated their 25th Anniversary in style at a party night in the Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar at the start of the month. A broad spectrum of members from the early days of the late '80s to the present time were among those enjoying the celebrations. It was a wonderful opportunity for old friends and rivals to meet again, run down memory lane, mix with the post millennium intake, and share training methods from the days of hand-written results sheets to today's racing menu where it's chips with everything. In tandem with the club's success, membership has grown from 30 odd in 1999 to over 140 in 2012.
